The Meaning of "Warrior"

by Randall Westfall

What does it mean to be a warrior? I'm contemplating this question nestled in the Cascade Mountains of Washington. About two months ago, I made the decision to attend the Anake Outdoor program at Wilderness Awareness School where I'll be mentored in wilderness survival skills, tracking, ethnobotany, nature observation, bird language, and mentoring others using the native model. You can check out more about Wilderness Awareness School's programs by visiting
www.wildernessawareness.org. The word "anake" is African Akamba for "warrior."

I'm looking forward to sharing with you more about this journey as I embark on the classic warrior journey (especially inner tracking) that has been missing in my life and modeled so well in the APA community. I want to share a song that we have been given by the "elders" of the Anake community:

How sweet the sound was in the night

The melodies flowed like water

The women sang of the moon's delight

And the men all sang of honey
